3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

Flammable, irritant.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation

If overcome by vapours, remove to fresh air and if breathing stopped, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. Obtain medical attention.

Eye contact

Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation develops, obtain medical attention.

Ingestion

Give 1 or 2 glasses of water or milk. Do not induce vomiting. Obtain immediate medical attention.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

Fire Extinguishing Agents

Water spray, carbon dioxide, alcohol resistant foam and dry powder

Special precautions

Evacuate enclosed areas, stay upwind. In confined space use self-contained breathing apparatus, positive pressure hose masks or airline masks. Use water spray to cool containers, to flush spills from source of ignition and to disperse vapours.

Vapours are heavier than air and may travel to source of ignition.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Eliminate all ignition sources. Avoid breathing of vapours. Keep liquid out of eyes. Flush with large amounts of water.  Contain liquid with sand or earth. Absorb with sand or non-flammable absorbent material and transfer into steel drums for recovery or disposal. Prevent liquid from entering the drains.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Store in the shade between 5ºC and 40ºC. All handling equipment should be electrically grounded. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame or other sources of ignition. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapour (refer to Exposure Controls). Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Train employees on all special handling procedures before they work with this product. Follow all precautionary information given on container label.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Workplace Exposure Limits

Methyl Ethyl Ketone (butanone) 200ppm (long term) & 300ppm (short term).

Cyclohexanone 10ppm (long term) & 20ppm (short term) can be absorbed through the skin; Acetone 500ppm (long term) & 1500ppm (short term)

NOTE: Long term = 8 hour TWA Reference period & Short term = 15 minute reference period

Respiratory Protection

Explosion proof general mechanical ventilation is recommended to maintain vapour concentrations below safe working limits. In situations where vapour concentrations exceed safe working limits, a self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn. The effectiveness of an air purifying is limited. Use it only for a single short-term exposure. For emergency and other conditions where short term exposure guidelines may be exceeded, use approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.

Hand protection

PVA coated gloves

Eye Protection

Splash-proof chemical goggles

Skin Protection

Impervious apron and source of running water to wash eyes or skin in case of contact.

Ventilation

Use only with adequate ventilation. Provide sufficient ventilation in volume and pattern to keep contaminates below applicable exposure limits.

9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Appearance Colourless thin liquid

Odour Ketone

Boiling Point 56°C

Flashpoint Minus 21ºC

Flammability Highly Flammable Vapour / air mixture explosive

Autoflammability 460ºC

Vapour pressure 190mm Hg, based on first boiling component, Acetone at 20°C

Vapour density 2.0 (Air = 1)

Specific gravity @ 20ºC 0.800 ± 0.040

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Fire hazard because of low flash point and high volatility. Vapours are heavier than air and may travel to source of ignition.

Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame and other sources of ignition.

Caustics, ammonia, inorganic acids, chlorinated compounds, strong oxidants and isocyanates.

Hazardous Decomposition Products

When forced to burn, this product gives off carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Primary routes of entry

Inhalation and skin contact.

EFFECTS OF ACUTE OVEREXPOSURE

Inhalation

Severe overexposure may result in nausea, dizziness and headache. Can cause drowsiness, irritation of eyes and nasal

passages.

Skin contact

Skin irritant. Liquid contact may remove natural skin oils resulting in irritation. Dermatitis may occur with prolonged skin contact.

Skin absorption

Prolonged or widespread exposure may result in severe eye injury with conjunctival inflammation on contact with the liquid. Vapours slightly uncomfortable.

Ingestion

Moderately toxic. May cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. May cause mental sluggishness.

EFFECTES OF CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE

High vapour concentrations may produce CNS depression. Depression may be evidenced by headache, dizziness and nausea. Aspirated material may cause severe lung damage and present a significant hazard.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE:

Individuals with pre-existing diseases of the eye, skin or respiratory system may have increased susceptibility to the toxicity of excessive exposures.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

None of the components of the preparation are classified as dangerous to the environment. However care should be taken to prevent material entering surface drains.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Dispose of in accordance with local regulations. Can be disposed of via incineration. Excessive quantities should not be permitted to enter drains. Empty containers should be air dried before disposal.
